How to Properly Store and Transport ESD-Sensitive Components 17.7.2026

A tiny spark—imperceptible to humans—is enough to cause irreparable damage to a highly complex assembly. Electrostatic discharges (ESD) are among the most common causes of hidden component damage in electronics manufacturing. The situation becomes particularly critical when components leave the protected zone, the EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area)—for example, on their way from production to shipping.

Anyone who cuts corners in the wrong places or lets processes drag on risks costly disruptions for customers. But how can you ensure seamless protection during transit and in the warehouse?

Transport from the EPA: The Most Dangerous Area

Components are protected within the EPA. However, as soon as they leave the EPA, electrostatic charges are a constant threat. To ensure safe transport, therefore:

  • Enclosed Transport: Sensitive electronic components (ESDS) must always be transported in enclosed, shielded containers.

  • Keep an eye on work surfaces: If the floor at the loading and unloading area is not conductive, all work surfaces must be ESD-compliant.

  • Employee Grounding: Grounding is essential. Employees on site must be grounded using a wrist strap at all times while handling the equipment.

  • Securing Loose Components: When transporting loose components, you should place them in conductive foam. This ensures that all connections are at the same potential and prevents voltage differences.

Packaging as a Necessary Measure: Choosing the Right Protective Cover

Outside an ESD-protected area, shielding packaging is not an option—it is mandatory. Packaging protects not only against static discharge but also against dust, moisture, and mechanical stress. In the ESD field, we distinguish between three categories:

  1. Packaging in direct contact: It is in direct contact with the component.

  2. Enveloping packaging: It does not come into direct contact with the part and encloses one or more components.

  3. Secondary packaging: This is intended solely for physical protection (e.g., thick cardboard boxes for shipping), but must never be placed in a recycling bin!

Important practical tip: Some packaging materials lose their moisture-wicking properties over time. They must be checked regularly and replaced. To protect against moisture, we also recommend using dry bags with built-in desiccant.

Markings: Visibility Ensures Safety

Even the best protection is useless if employees do not recognize that the goods are sensitive. ESD-sensitive components and assemblies must be marked with clearly visible signs and labels directly on the component. The storage area itself should also be clearly designated as an ESD protection zone using unambiguous floor markings.
