Markings in the ESD protection zone

Markings in the ESD protection zone 26.7.2023

ESD protection zones or ESD workplaces are areas where sensitive electronic parts, devices or components are protected from electrostatic discharge to prevent damage caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Markings in the ESD protection zone, for products in the ESD protection zone and also for the demarcation of the ESD area or the ESD workplace are in the EPAof great importance.

Different types of markings are for example:

  • ESD warning signs: These signs warn employees and visitors that they are in an ESD-controlled area. The sign often shows a crossed-out lightning symbol and indicates that special precautions are required.

  • ESD protection symbol: This symbol indicates that this is a specially designated ESD protection area.

  • Ground markings: Special floor markings may be placed in ESD protection zones to indicate the safe area. These markings can indicate the path to the ESD discharge or to special ESD-safe workstations.

  • Instructional Signs: These signs can provide specific instructions for the behavior and handling of parts, equipment or components to prevent ESD damage.

  • ESD workstations: ESD-safe workstations can be labeled to indicate to employees where they can safely handle electronic components without risking damage from ESD.

These markings and signs are designed to raise awareness of the danger of electrostatic discharge and to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to protect sensitive electronic components and equipment from damage. The exact requirements for labeling and ESD protection measures may vary by industry, country and specific ESD guidelines.
